Web Desk ::On Tuesday, the Sindh Social Welfare Department informed the SHC that the senior citizens would be offered Azadi Cards under which they would be able to get a concession on medical treatment at private hospitals.The Sindh High Court heard a petition asking to enforce a law offering 25 percent concession to the senior citizens during medical treatment at the private hospitals.

The Sindh Social Welfare Department filed a reply in the court and informed it that the department was making efforts to draft the Azadi Cards for the senior citizens of the province.During the court hearing session, the lawyer of the social welfare department informed the court that the private hospitals have been bound to 25 percent concession to the senior citizens under the Sindh Senior Citizens Welfare Bill.

On this, a council of the private hospitals said that they would not offer a discount to any of the senior citizens without Azadi cards.The court was told that as per the law, private hospitals are to offer a concession on medical treatment to all the senior citizens with Azadi Cards, none would be offered any special discount on medical treatments without cards.The meeting was adjourned by the Sindh High Court until the 21st of October.

It is important to mention that the government had passed the Sindh Senior Citizens Welfare Bill in 2016. Under this bill, the senior citizens are to be given these cards by the Senior Citizens Council which entitles the senior citizens for certain essential services and benefits.The benefits include 25 percent concession on transportation fees and other purchases, discounts at the recreation centers, free burial and funeral services and free medical treatment and health services from the government medical institutions.
